City College Norwich

City College Norwich

This day formed part of the College's winter skills week in Scotland. A day's event took place at the Glenmore Lodge outside towers. The main difference here was that, although the use of crampons are the norm on the Lodge towers, the event was run with the students just using trainers and walking boots. Most of the day was spent climbing, a good effort seeing as they were going to have to drive home to Norfolk from Glenmore the following day!

The event started with some coaching on the indoor wall. Axes were pre-palced so students could practise swapping hands as they traversed the wall.

Coaching was then given on advanced movement skills, such as 'Stein pulls'.

The outside towers were then used, with a number of routes being set up.

Helmets with wire visors were used as standard, as they vastly reduce the chance of facial injury if an axe should slip.

Some of the solutions to problems were quite dynamic!

The students, some of whom were experienced climbers, were belaying each other throughout the day.

Once the students had finished their day, it was time for the staff to have some fun of their own!
